A few years ago, my family and I were touring an island in the West Indies. The unique thing about this island was that none of the roads had names. Armed with a pictorial map and a rented jeep with no power steering, we jostled and laughed our way blindly around the island. At one point, we came to a fork in the road. "Which way?" asked my dad. My mother, known for her Yogi Berra-esque comments of truth veiled within seemingly nonsensical statements, replied, "You can make a left or a right, and it'll take you to the same place." Once our laughter had subsided, she showed us the map. Sure enough, the road split - but joined up again on the other side of the island. The quote would go down in family history.
The other day, I was perusing GoogleEarth, mapping out the country that would be my new home for this exciting chapter in my life. Inadvertently, I hit a key that took me back to my current location, Buffalo, NY. I watched with an odd swooping sensation in my stomach as the globe on the screen made a full 180-degree turn. Singapore could not be further away from my hometown. In fact (I had begun to laugh now), if I made a left... or a right... from Buffalo and went around the planet... it would take me to the same place: Singapore!
